Making Christmas Special In A Pandemic

Tacky baubles and colourful Christmas lights hanging around the shopping centres. This is the hallmarks of Christmas that I’ve come to know and love. But this years Christmas is going to be a little different. After a year of isolation and appreciating the small luxuries, I think we all deserve a little treat.

We’ll still have the traditional soundtrack- because it isn’t Christmas without a bit of Wham! and Wizzard to lift the spirits- COVID means our Christmas will look a little different this year.

Many people have chosen to bring the festive period forward a little earlier this year, in an attempt to make the most of it. John Lewis and McDonalds have released their Christmas adverts, as well as a few others. So there’s no denying it now.

But how do we keep the festive atmosphere alive this year?

Get The Decorations Up Early

I think it goes without saying that nobody is going to judge you for getting the tinsel out earlier this year. What better way to get you and your household in the Christmas spirit a little earlier?

While I was at University, our favourite thing was whipping out the decorations to turn our damp student house into something a little more festive. It was important for us to try feel at home and bringing everyone together for the festive activities did that.

Assemble a make-ahead breakfast

Opening presents takes a lot of energy, and so you’ll want to refuel afterward with a hearty breakfast. Try one you can prep the night before so all you have to do on Christmas morning is pop it in the oven.

Make Cookies

Baking cookies is great for any time of day or year, it’s relaxing and makes your home smell delicious. Before you get started, make sure you have some fun cookie cutters, frostings, and decorations on hand.

Make Some Cozy Cocktails

There are so many cozy and festive flavours you can add to a cocktail. Find a recipe you’re interested in and whip up a batch of festive old fashions on Christmas morning. A warm stovetop option is a cozy way to celebrate the season.

Make Something To Commemorate The Day

The 2020 holiday season is bound to be unique so why not make an ornament to remember it by? Mix a salt dough recipe (All you need is flour, salt, and water) and make a handprint or cookie-cutter ornament. Don’t forget to write the year in paint.

Host A Virtual Party

Just because you can’t get together in person doesn’t mean you can’t see your friends and family on Christmas. Send everyone a Zoom link and host your party online. Make sure you’ve got a few games and conversation starters ready too.

Go Exploring

In all honesty I’m quite excited for this one. Even when I lived in a small town I used to love walking through all the Christmas decorations people had put up outside their homes. This year I’m hoping to truly experience the Christmas life in London, but it’ll be even better in the current situation as half of the city is empty. Stay tuned to my IG for some cute pictures of me wandering around Oxford Circus at 3am.
