How to be a freelancer

Nobody knows.

At my last job my boss was obsessed with how far she’d got in her career by my age. I don’t know whether it was meant be motivation or scrutiny, but I always found it weird. So what if you’d started a freelancing a business by the age of 22? I haven’t and I’m totally fine with that. I knew I was good at my job, and I loved what I did.

Now, I’m quite proud of the fact I’ve done the same, I’ve got a small freelancing hustle alongside my full-time job and I love it. I get to collaborate with people I admire, and work towards a bigger business venture.

But that doesn’t mean I have a bloody clue what I’m doing. And I don’t think anybody does to be honest. I catch up with my freelancing buddies daily, and I’m countless group chats for freelancers. People are always asking for advice on how to charge, invoice, and respond to emails. As much as we claim to be experts, we’re all beginners at some part of it.

I feel like it’s not talked about enough, and not just in relation to marketing. None of us have a clue what we’re doing on the day-to-day, and if you do, you’re probably a socio-path.

I’m sure my last boss asked the same questions I do, and countless others do, when she was starting out at 22. We’re all human and we all make mistakes, and that’s exactly what helps us be great at what we do.

This post is very quickly turning into another rant. But It’s needed. How do you become a freelancer? Nobody knows, just roll with it. Because even if you f*ck up, you’ll get life lessons to last a lifetime, and hopefully, you’ll have a circle of people to help you get past it.
